Drinking WaterWhile the average australian uses over 280 litres of clean, safe water every day, many people in developing countries survive on just 10 litres of water. And that must cover all their drinking, washing and cooking needs.

And often that is dirty and unsafe. The result is catastrophic.

Over two million children die each year from complications caused by drinking dirty water. Each one of these deaths is preventable.

Time for a vent, specifically about those emails that makes its way round the Internet, the messages that are absurd, conspiratorial, absent any supporting facts, that are ridiculously partisan, and that actually result in blunting substantive efforts to bring about the very thing the majority of these people signaled in some way or other, that they actually want.

This is one of those emails.  This email tries to appeal to some strange sense of nationalism and justice by stating that by contributing to Foreign Aid we are doing so at a huge cost to out own country and those within it.

We’re “broke” & can’t help our own Seniors, Troops, Orphans, Homeless etc.
In the last month we have provided aid to Haiti, Indonesia, Timor, Turkey, Greece and Pakistan .

Our Aged Pensioners living on a ‘fixed income’
Receive no aid or get any breaks while our
Government and religious organizations pour
Hundreds of Millions of $$$$$$’S and Tons of Food to Foreign Countries!

We have thousands of adoptable children who are shoved aside to make room for the adoption of foreign orphans.

AUSTRALIA a country where we have homeless without shelter, children and adults going to bed hungry,
Elderly going without ‘needed’ medication, and
Mentally ill without treatment -etc,etc.
They are requesting donations for the people of Pakistan, a country currently buying fighter planes worth $1.4 billion.

Ships and planes lining up with food, water, tents clothes, bedding, Doctors and medical supplies.

Imagine if the *GOVERNMENT* gave ‘US’ the same support they give to other Countries.

Sad, Isn’t It? 99% of people won’t have the guts to forward This.
I Just Did !

Where to begin…

Firstly I have seen the US version of this one floating around this is simply a copy of that crudly adapted to meet Australia.  So I have started by doing the same thing as a starting point.  Fairs fair.  Credit to   For the moment I will not even cover the benifits Australia gets from aid or the morality involved in assisting.  No I will just address the points the “Author” has raised.

We’re “Broke”
Here in Australia. OK we have some debt but I get the impression we are doing OK. I wouldn’t call a $4000 debt per head of population broke, especially when other countries have more like $50000.

We’re “broke” & can’t help our own Seniors, Veterans, Orphans,Homeless etc……….
Excuse me – 180 000 Million expenditure on Social Security, Welfare and Health. That’s nearly 50% of Federal Government Expenditure based on 2011/2012 expenditure projections (breakup below).

We don’t help our Aged Pensioners?
It’s called Social Security and Medicare, including the pharmaceutical   benefits scheme.  Could the programs be better? Yes. Would a lot of seniors have more money now if they had invested in their own retirement? Yes.

We could do a much better job with their medical care. And they don’t get paid nearly enough for what they do, particularly if they serve in combat. But, besides that, there are many benefits provided.  There are also a lot of programs aimed at doing things for soldiers and families through many, many private groups.

I thought there was a shortage of adoptable babies. Yes, we do have a lot of children in foster care, which is a real can of worms that I’m not going to get into right now. I don’t see a lot of orphans roaming the streets of Australia.

Why do we have homeless? There was a marked uptick in the number of homeless people following policy changes regarding how mentally ill individuals were handled and treated, and of course, there is a correlation between substance abuse and homelessness. Aren’t there myriad efforts to help the homeless, both public and private?

In the last months we have provided aid to Haiti , Indonesia, Chile , Turkey, Greece and Pakistan .
Is this the actual point of the email?  It’s so difficult to determine. According to the ausaid website we don’t give to Turkey or Greece so where did this list come from? FYI here’s a map from Ausaid’s website of where we do give aid In 2011–12, Australia will provide $4.8 billion worth of official development assistance.  By 2015–16 the annual aid figure is estimated to reach around $8–9 billion (0.5 per cent of Gross National Income – this is a bipartisan commitment from both sides of politics). Sounds a lot?  Sure – more than I’ll ever earn.  However make sure you put it in perspective. 33 per cent of money is currently spent on social security and welfare – thats around $122 billion.

Our retired seniors living on a ‘fixed income’ receive no aid or get any breaks while our government and religious organizations pour Hundreds of Millions of $$$$$’s and Tons of Food into Foreign Countries!Again…seniors? No aid? Breaks?…ever heard of senior discounts? Again, if too much foreign aid by government is the point, why tear down religious organizations for doing it? Don’t we want to promote PRIVATE charity? Is the point of this email about how government spends its money or how money is spent in general? I can’t quite figure this out, either.

We have hundreds of adoptable children who are shoved aside to make room for the adoption of foreign orphans.
Actually, I believe there are many thousands of adoptable children, but there are not as many infants as parents who wish to adopt them. It turns out that the number of foreign adoptions has drastically dropped due to an international agreement in 2008. The largest number of adoptable children are in the foster care system, and is that not caused by a variety of social factors? Is the lack of adoption of these children caused by the failure of government intervention? It’s a challenge to adopt older children, so is it any wonder they are harder to place?

USA, a country where we have homeless without shelter, children going to bed hungry, elderly going without ‘needed’ meds, and mentally ill without treatment – etc, etc…
Is it lack of government programs that has caused ANY of these problems? Lack of concern?

ARE the mentally ill going without treatment?
WHERE are the statistics to back up any of this?

Hungry children? Ever heard of the reduced-price and free breakfast and lunch programs delivered at the schools (not to mention that some schools now serve dinner)? In addition to school lunches, there is food stamps and WIC. Beyond that, there is a program that sends backpacks of food home on weekends that run by local food banks and from what I can discover, is funded locally with private dollars. There is even a video about this program.

They give money to 150 nations in the world and to the United Nations.
Too much foreign aid and membership in the United Nations has been poor policy, it’s true. But once again, was THIS email the way to make the point?

Imagine if the *GOVERNMENT* gave ‘us’ the same support they give to other countries.
It seems fairly clear that we don’t have to “imagine” government giving to “us” at all. It clearly is.. And that brings me to another point; the government does not just “give”. In order to give, it has to take from someone else. All of this giving, however is not government’s job.   Also if we got the same level of support that would mean around 10 % of what we are getting currently?  Is that what you really want ?  Seems opposite to the rest of the email?

Sad isn’t it?
Yes, but not for the reason the author or forwarder thinks.
99% of people won’t have the guts to forward this.
This is not a question of guts, it’s a question of good sense.

I Just Did”
Yes! I’m well aware…otherwise…how could I have received it?

We are all just little fish in a Big pond
One little Fish working alone can make a difference
Many Little Fish working together can change the world

So the aim of this blog? Basically I see and hear a lot of things, a lot of misinformation. Often it’s things I know are wrong but do not have the facts to make my point. Other times its getting a view out there backed up by facts. So it’s probablyy going to be alot of things centered I think around injustice and making a positive difference. If nothing else I will get the facts together for my own reference. If someone actually reads this it will be a real bonus.
